The Revision of the Declaration of Helsinki: Principles, Evolution and New Perspectives for Ethical and Responsible Research
The Research Ethics and Integrity Office and the INTEGRA Research Group of the University of Trento are promoting this series of meetings with the aim of trying to provide skills and awareness to foster a culture of ethics and integrity across all levels of the academic community.

Adopted in 1964 by the World Medical Association, the Declaration of Helsinki is one of the leading international references for ethical principles governing medical research involving human participants. Periodically revised to respond to changes in research and society, it defines fundamental principles for the protection of research participants and for the responsible conduct of research. The conference will provide an overview of the 2024 revision, which calls upon the entire research community, including teams and organizations involved in medical research, to take responsibility for promoting and applying these principles. The main updates introduced by the revision will be presented, including the strengthening of the protection of participants and of their role, as well as that of communities, in research, the recognition of the public health dimension, collective well-being and psychosocial aspects, the greater consideration given to scientific integrity, environmental sustainability and the fair distribution of benefits, the reformulation of the concept of vulnerability and the importance of inclusion, as well as the reaffirmation of the role of research ethics committees. The event aims to discuss the impact of these developments on research ethics and research integrity together with experts in these fields.

The seminar will be held within the BioLaw course at the Faculty of Law, UniTrento, and is jointly organized by UniTrento’s INTEGRA Research Group and BioLaw Laboratory.
