Abstract

In this lecture, I will discuss the state of academic freedom in Turkey, under an authoritarian government influenced by neoliberal policies. To explore this, the lecture will examine how the Turkish govrenment has targeted academic freedom and higher education in the country through two specific cases. The first case involves the attack on academics who, in 2016, signed a petition under the banner of Academics for Peace, calling for an end to the violence perpetrated by the Turkish government against civilians, primarily Kurdish people, in south-eastern Turkey. The second case focuses on the struggle of Boğaziçi University in defending institutional autonomy and academic freedom.
