From Patterns to Algebra: Lessons for Exploring Linear Relationships

How can we support the early development of algebraic reasoning in students? From Patterns to Algebra, by Dr. Cathy Bruce and Dr. Ruth Beatty, is the culmination of a seven-year, classroom-based design research project conducted in Canada. The book offers a carefully sequenced series of visual and hands-on lessons to help students make sense of what it means to think algebraically. In this interactive seminar, we will outline the research design that informed the project, share key findings, and explore strategies to support the early conceptual foundations of students’ algebraic thinking through engaging classroom experiences.
