Today, cryptography stands at the intersection of computer science and mathematics, but it wasn’t always this way. Its algebraic principles emerged from underestimating adversaries and paying the price for it. We will trace its history and its transformation into a science. Human error, intentional backdoors, and the Crypto Wars will demonstrate that the true battlefield is not the algebra of ciphers, but the control over who can communicate in secret and who cannot. A question that has yet to find an answer.
