Programme

The Alumni Meeting of the School of International Studies is a unique opportunity to reconnect with fellow graduates, strengthen professional and personal ties, and expand the alumni network. The gathering will provide a space to share experiences, exchange perspectives on post-graduation paths, and celebrate the sense of belonging to the SIS community.

Welcome address by Stefano Schiavo (Director School of International Studies) and Massimiliano Bampi (Director Department of Humanities)

Keynote address by Catherine E. Riley’s "Talking Rubbish: Why is nobody listening?"

While not often a headline winner, waste is winning out. Whether from fast fashion in landfills, plastics in oceans or municipal waste incinerators, or from industrial and agricultural waste, food and e-waste, harmful microparticles leech into the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat.
Waste is suffocating wildlife, destroying ecosystems and devastating biodiversity. It’s a (if not the) major climate change accelerant. And as with most global issues, the detrimental impact of waste affects the most vulnerable in society, both nationally and globally.
The economic as well as planetary costs of dealing with waste are as high as the mountains and deep as the oceans it is degrading. So why is waste, in particular the prevention of it, absent from mainstream climate discourse? And why for decades has the framing of waste discourse failed to translate into decisive action at any level?
This talk will ask whether reframing the waste discourse, not least its communication channels, could finally shift economic, political and individual will toward real solutions at all levels, from global to individual.
The talk will conclude with a very easy but extremely impactful origami activity!
