Us Against When: Anticipation and Social Conflict
Abstract
Social conflicts are defined by an “us against them” dynamic that amplifies as a conflict escalates. The presentation will explore how futures methods can support the anticipation and transformation of social conflicts, changing the dynamic from “us against them” to “us against when.
”Dr. Eggers will share the results of his 2024 dissertation research that utilized futures and sensemaking approaches in the context of peacebuilding in the United States and share recent experiments from San Diego, California. The presentation will demonstrate why futures are an important tool for peacebuilders and social innovators and suggest practical ways to implement these projects.
About the speaker
Dr. Keil Eggers is a peace scholar and founder of Us Against When, a consulting company and brand that makes peaceful futures tangible. As a key player in the peace technology and peace engineering movement, he has developed methods to combine large-scale narrative research,sensemaking, and futures and foresight methods to support peacebuilding in highly-polarized conflict situations. He specializes in making lived experience the focus of decision-making processes in public sector innovation initiatives. He has conducted over 20 research projects related to conflict, futures and foresight, and participatory sensemaking in the United States, Ukraine, Basque Country, Thailand, and Senegal. His current book project, titled “Us Against When” showcases how futures methods and anticipatory systems can support peacebuilders in navigating the new era of conflict. He completed his PhD and BA in Conflict Analysis and
Resolution at George Mason University's Carter School, and MA in International Peace Studies at UPEACE. He currently resides in San Diego, CA.
