The COSENO initiative— part of the Department of Physics strategic program — invites researchers, PhD students and students to a focused workshop on how artificial intelligence is reshaping scientific research and the future of scholarly publishing. Two expert talks will open the floor to a lively public discussion on good and ethical practices in scientific publishing and the responsible use of AI.

•    2:00 p.m. Welcome and motivation of the workshop - Prof. Gianluca Lattanzi, head of the Physics Department

•    2:10 p.m. The role of AI in scientific publishing - Dr. Oliver Graydon, Chief Editor of Nature Photonics

Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to profoundly transform how science is conducted and communicated. This talk will discuss current trends, opportunities, risks, and challenges associated with AI from the viewpoint of scientific publishing, with a focus on clarifying the present policies and principles adopted by Nature journals and Springer-Nature.

•    3:00 p.m. Artificial intelligence and personalized knowledge - Dr. Alberto Puliafito, journalist, director and producer

With generative and agentic artificial intelligence, we can reshape the way we produce, disseminate, and interpret knowledge. Journalism and scientific publishing share a common challenge: ensuring quality, transparency, and reliability in a context where the automated production of texts, images, and data risks undermining the very foundations of knowledge. This talk explores the opportunities and risks of this transformation, with a focus on the responsibility of those who create and disseminate content, and on the business models that remain the elephant in the room.

•    4.00 p.m. "The Uncertainty Principle of AI: Promise, Peril, and Pedagogy"

A public debate on the promises, risks, and ethical challenges of artificial intelligence in research, teaching, and scientific publishing—exploring how AI is reshaping academic practices, redefining roles, and raising crucial questions about integrity, creativity, and responsibility.

For those interested the workshop will continue with an evening event at main hall of Palazzo Consolati via S. Maria Maddalena 1, 38122 Trento

•    8:30 p.m. Dr. Sara Hejazi and Dr. Alberto Puliafito

Dr. Sara Hejazi, anthropologist - Dr. Alberto Puliafito, journalist, director and producer

A conversation between an anthropologist and a journalist on the impact of artificial intelligence on our everyday lives.
Silently moderated by Lorenzo Pavesi.
