Abstract

Surface tension energies whose energy density depends on the tangent plane are ubiquitous, both in pure mathematics and in applications. However, several fundamental questions remain open or are only partially understood. In this talk, I will survey a number of problems related to the study of anisotropic energies together with classical, recent  and very recent results.

Bio:

Guido De Philippis is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Padova. He obtained his PhD from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa in 2012, under the supervision of Luigi Ambrosio and Luis Caffarelli. After postdoctoral positions in Bonn and Zurich, he was a researcher at the CNRS in Lyon, a professor at SISSA in Trieste, and, from 2019 to 2025, a professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.

His research focuses on the calculus of variations, geometric measure theory, and partial differential equations, with particular emphasis on regularity and singularity questions for geometric variational problems. His work has been recognized with several major awards, including the European Mathematical Society Prize, the Stampacchia Medal, and the Caccioppoli Prize. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2018 and is the principal investigator of the ERC Consolidator Grant RISE.
