The evolution of the borders of the Thessalian Confederation with its neighbours can be studied on the basis of two inscriptions.
One is a letter from King Demetrius Poliorcetes (294 BC) to the city of Demetrias, a copy of which was found in Dion, Macedonia. The king establishes the border between Demetrias, recently founded on ancient Thessalian and Magnesian soil, and the city of Pherai : the landmarks used to characterize the border line were few notable points where ‘master’ boundary markers were placed, to be most likely materialized on the ground by closer regular boundary markers.
The second inscription comes from Doliche, a city of the Perrhaibian Tripolis, located in the region of Mount Olympus. It defines the administrative and financial procedures for organising the guarding of the civic territory (paraphylakè) and describes the area to be monitored by one Menon and his troops, thereby defining the boundaries of Doliche with its two neighbouring cities, Azoros and Pythoion, and the Macedonian community of Elimiotis : as such, the border separates also the koinon of Thessaly and the Roman Province of Macedonia.
In both cases, we will trace the changes and evolution of these borders between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC.
