This lecture introduces Windhoek as a city rich in history, diversity and contrasts and seeks to explore how the capital of Namibia defines itself through an examination of its linguistic landscape. Since its foundation in the 19th century, Windhoek has experienced the colonial administration of Germany, as well as South African apartheid. While its linguistic landscape has changed drastically after independence in 1990, many aspects remain colonial.
