Revisiting academic freedom

Abstract:

In this seminar, we will discuss the meaning of ‘academic freedom’ in relation to other ‘freedoms’, such as the freedom of expression. Drawing on his experience as director of an Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS-KNAW), prof. Duyvendak examines threats to academic freedom, from within academia and from the outside, particularly from political parties of the radical right. How to position ourselves in these debates? What can we do to strengthen academic freedom and, more broadly, the pillars of liberal democracy?

Jan Willem Duyvendak is Emeritus Professor at the University of Amsterdam and Honorary Fellow at NIAS-Amsterdam). His main fields of research are in urban and migration studies, with a focus on the culturalization of citizenship, nativism, the transformation of the welfare state, gender and sexuality, and the sociology of belonging, emotion, and home.
