Abstract

The James Webb Space Telescope is in space, fully deployed, smoothly traveling to its home in L2. It has been a very long journey and the best part has just began. During this talk, I will first present the JWST instruments (NIRCam, NIRSpec, NIRISS, and MIRI) and their capabilities. I will then talk about the science the telescope will enable in its first year, with focus on galaxy formation and evolution and on the programs that will deliver data with no proprietary period. In particular, I will talk about an accepted proposal to study the first galaxies measuring their star formation histories, metal content, and winds. Lastly, I will give an overview of the JWST calibration pipeline and the new tools for spectral analysis recently developed at the Space Telescope Science Institute to hit the ground running when the first data arrive.
